Nepal's Geography, Challenging Preconditions

The Kingdom of Nepal, situated between India and China against the impressive Himalayas, comprises one of the most diverse climatic ranges and physical environments in the world. From the Genetic plains at about 70 meters altitude to the Mount Everest at 8,848 meters altitude there is only a distance of 170 km. These slopes are the world’s steepest, resulting in numerous untamable rivers, tributaries, plus countless streams separating the very many communities. These topographic extremes are accompanied by extremes in climate. From as high as 48º Centigrade in the tropical Terai to as low as minus 35º Centigrade in the Himalayas where vegetation is absent. Melting snow in summer from high altitudes, compounded by very high precipitation during the monsoon from alpine altitudes further down, makes rivers swell beyond control. The Himalayas present world’s youngest geology, manifested by frequent landslides and earthquakes. These conditions make building infrastructures, such as roads, trails, bridges etc. a most challenging task for geologists and engineers.
